Beyond the Beach Clubs: A Different Side of Bali

Bali's beach clubs are fun, and we love a good sunset as much as anyone. But the island is far bigger than its coastline, and the most memorable days often happen when you leave the lounger behind. Beyond the beach clubs there are rice terraces, mountain lakes, village workshops and quiet black sand shores that still feel like authentic Bali. Here is where to start, and what to wear when you go.

Sidemen and the Eastern Valleys

East of Ubud, the Sidemen Valley is one of the island's calmest corners. Terraced rice fields drop toward the river, Mount Agung rises behind, and weavers still work at traditional looms in small family workshops. It is a place for walking, not for scheduling. A linen blend like our Breeze Linen Blend Pants is ideal for long walks in warm air, and flat sandals will serve you better than anything else you could pack.

Amed and Hidden Shores

On the northeast coast, Amed is a string of quiet fishing villages with black volcanic sand and some of the island's easiest snorkelling. Colourful traditional boats rest on the shore, and salt makers still work by hand in places. Pack a secure swimsuit and a hat, and leave the crowds behind. A one piece from our one pieces collection is a good companion for long swims along the reef, and dries quickly in the sun.

Villages and Local Craft

Bali's villages remain centres of craft. Celuk is known for silver, Mas for wood carving, and Tenganan in the east for its distinctive woven cloth, made in a rare double ikat technique. An hour in a workshop teaches you more about the island than any beach could. Dress modestly and respectfully, covering shoulders and knees where appropriate, and buy directly from the makers whenever you can. It is the most meaningful souvenir you will bring home.

Temples, Terraces and Waterfalls

Inland the pleasures multiply. The rice terraces of Jatiluwih are among the island's most remarkable landscapes, and waterfalls such as Sekumpul in the north reward a short trek. Many temples ask visitors to wear a sarong and sash, which makes a lightweight sarong one of the most useful things you can carry. Ours is soft, dries quickly and doubles as a wrap or a picnic blanket, which is exactly the kind of versatility authentic Bali travel rewards.

Slow Travel, Honest Pace

The key to this side of the island is pace. Hire a driver for the day or rent a scooter with care, leave early to beat the heat, and allow time for long lunches at family run warungs. Authentic Bali is not found on a schedule. It is found in the conversation you did not plan and the road you took by mistake. Wear what lets you say yes to everything, which usually means light, loose and comfortable.

The island's best days rarely have a dress code, only a sense of curiosity.

What to Pack for the Island's Other Side

A little preparation goes a long way. Bring a sarong, a hat, sturdy sandals, a lightweight layer for cooler mountain mornings and your favourite piece of Bali swimwear for the unexpected waterfall or river. Keep everything in a soft bag that can handle a little mud and a lot of sun. The island rewards those who travel light, and the best Bali swimwear is the kind that is already packed when a detour appears.

The Coast Nobody Photographs

Even the coastline has quiet corners if you are willing to look. Along the northwest, the dark sand beaches near Pemuteran and the reefs of Menjangan Island offer calm water and excellent snorkelling, far from the crowds of the south. These are the places to bring your most dependable Bali swimwear, a secure fit and quick drying fabric, because the best moments are rarely planned. Take a small bag, a sarong and plenty of water, and you will find that authentic Bali often begins exactly where the beach clubs end.

Respect and Reciprocity

Travelling beyond the beach clubs also means travelling with a little more care. Ask before photographing people or ceremonies, follow temple rules and keep offerings undisturbed on the ground. Spend your money in family run places where it matters most. A little humility goes a long way here, and the island repays it in warmth, conversation and invitations you could never have planned.

Plan Your Escape

Explore our sarongs, pants and beach bags to put together your own travel kit, or visit us in Berawa, Canggu or Padang Padang before you head out. Beyond the beach clubs, Bali is quieter, greener and far more surprising. It is also easier than you think to reach, and rewarding in every season. Go once, and you may find that the beach club becomes the side trip, and the island itself becomes the destination.
