A Slow Morning in Bali: Our Favorite Ways to Start the Day

Bali wakes early, and the best part of the day is often over by nine. Before the heat builds and the roads fill, the island belongs to fishermen, surfers, yogis and anyone willing to set an alarm. A slow morning here is not about doing less, it is about doing exactly what you want, at exactly the pace you choose. These are our favourite ways to spend a Bali morning, and the simple things we wear for them.

Walk the Beach at First Light

Early light on the water is the best reason to wake up. Along the coast from Canggu to Berawa, the sand is cool and nearly empty at sunrise, with surfers paddling out and the occasional dog trotting past. On the east coast, Sanur has a long, gentle promenade made for an unhurried stroll. A lightweight sarong over your shoulders and bare feet in the sand are all the preparation you need. Our Aloha Sarong folds small enough to carry in one hand and is large enough to sit on when you want to stop and watch the waves.

A Morning Swim

The sea is calmest in the early hours, which makes it the best time for a swim. Pull on a piece of Bali swimwear you can trust to stay put, such as a one piece from our one pieces collection, and wade in before the crowds arrive. A short swim sets the tone for the whole day, clearing the head and waking the body gently. Afterwards the sun is already warm enough to dry you in minutes, and the slow morning stretches out in front of you.

Movement and Stillness

Bali is famous for yoga, and a morning class is one of the great pleasures of the island. Studios across Canggu, Ubud and Uluwatu offer sessions from dawn onwards, and many are open to the breeze. Wear something soft that moves with you. If you prefer to stay outdoors, a few minutes of stretching on the sand with a sarong as a mat is just as good. The aim is not performance, it is arriving in the day gently.

Coffee, Fruit and a Long Breakfast

A slow morning deserves a proper breakfast. Across the island you will find cafés serving smoothie bowls, tropical fruit, eggs and strong local coffee at tables open to the garden or the street. Sit for longer than you planned. Order a second coffee. Watch the neighbourhood begin. Breakfast in Bali is meant to be lingered over, and a linen shirt over a swimsuit is all the dress code required. Add our Arun Hat and you are ready for whatever the day decides next.

The best part of a Bali morning is how little it asks of you.

Ubud's Early Hours

If you want a different kind of Bali morning, head inland. In Ubud, the Campuhan Ridge Walk is quietest at dawn, with mist lifting from the valley and soft light moving across the grass. It is a short, gentle path with a great reward. Afterwards, rice fields and temples are only minutes away. Dress lightly, bring water, and give yourself time to go slowly.

Dress for the Pace

A slow morning calls for clothes that ask nothing of you. A swimsuit under a sarong, a hat, flat sandals and a bag you can sling over one shoulder. That is the whole uniform. Choose soft colours and natural fabrics that look good unbrushed and unironed. The less you think about what you are wearing, the more of the morning you will notice, and the more of the island you will take home.

A Slow Morning at Home Base

Not every slow morning needs an outing. Sometimes the best one is a quiet hour on a villa terrace with fruit, coffee and nowhere to be. Slip into a sarong, leave your hair loose, and watch the garden wake up. Many of our customers tell us this is when they feel most at home on the island. Keep a favourite piece of Bali swimwear within reach, so that a spontaneous dip in the pool can happen at any moment, and let the rest of the plan arrange itself around you.

Make It Yours

Explore our beachwear and beach bags collections to build a morning kit, or visit us in Berawa, Canggu or Padang Padang. Slow mornings are a habit, and like most good habits they grow quickly. Try one, and you may find the rest of the day gets easier too. That is the quiet gift of a Bali morning, and it begins the moment you decide not to rush it. Set the alarm, leave the phone behind, and let the island begin without you.
